This magnificent bridge extends 2.1 miles (11,179 feet) over San Diego Bay and opened on August 3, 1969. It has a vertical clearance of 200 feet, allowing any ship to pass easily beneath. On either side of the bridge, a 34 inch barrier is constructed in such a way that if hit by traffic, the vehicle will bounce back toward the lanes. Many claim the bridge was designed to float if downed.
